KEEN was born in 2003 with a shoe that split the world into two camps: the Newport sandal with a closed rubber toe cap, a hybrid between sandal and shoe that protected toes on the boat, on the water and on the trail. One idea grew into a Portland brand that kept its habit of doing things its own way. The strongest chapter is chemistry: KEEN decided to remove PFAS — the so-called forever chemicals used for waterproofing — from its shoes, and when it succeeded after years of development, it did something rarely seen in business. Add family ownership, in-house manufacturing of part of its footwear line and long-term community programmes.
