Collection: Women's Gestalten

Gestalten is a Berlin publishing house with roots in the techno scene: founded in 1995, its first book The Localizer was paid for by orders from rave flyers. Since then it has documented visual culture with an obsessiveness rarely seen in books. Design, architecture, typography, travel, food, subcultures: subjects the big publishers lack the nerve or the feel for receive from Gestalten the form of books that are design objects in their own right. Paper is chosen by content, binding by paper, typesetting by binding. The result is a rare kind of object: a book you buy for the subject and leave on the shelf for decades, because its spine does the interior the same service as its content does the mind. At a time when visual inspiration has degenerated into endless scrolling, Gestalten offers the opposite: a curated, self-contained whole with a beginning, an end and a point of view. Print culture that survived the internet not in spite of it but thanks to it, because it offers exactly what the screen cannot: stillness, depth and weight. Literally.
